AIRLINE INDUSTRY UPDATE
The travel industry is going strong and growing! United Airlines reports 119 million 2nd Quarter Profits, Southwest 333 million, American Airlines 58 million, Continental 198 million, JetBlue 13 million, Alaska Airlines 55.5 million, AirTran 32 million, Frontier Airlines 4 million, Midwest Airlines 8.8 million, US Airways has reported profits but an exact figure. Northwest and Delta Airlines have not reported yet. ARC "Airline Reporting Corporation" reports July travel agent sales up 8%, 5.8 Billion. Year to date sales are up 12%, 47.4 Billion.
NEW TRAVEL DESTINATION "OUTER SPACE"
Virgin Galactic, a Virgin Group company (we placed a graduate with Virgin Atlantic Airlines last week) plans to launch its space tourism product in the next 2 to 3 years. Sub orbital flights will sell for $200,000 and will be commissionable to travel agents. The package will include 3 days of astronaut training, G force acclimatization and a two-hour space flight. The spacecraft travels 50,000 feet up while attached to a mother ship. Then the rockets fire and the space craft travels vertically reaching 3,000 miles per hour until it climbs to about 75 miles above Earth's surface. Then the rocket motor shuts down and the passengers will "hear" the silence of space and, for about 5 minutes, experience weightlessness after which the space ship begins to glide back to earth.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR TRAVEL ACADEMY GRADUATES
The Travel Academy had our bi-monthly "Hiring Fair" last week and as usual had more travel companies wishing to attend than we could allow. There were many more jobs available than we had graduates! We had an airline from Atlanta send a representative to hire Flight Attendants, Reservation Agents and Ticket/Gate Agents. There were also many Travel Agent Companies here looking to hire our students/graduates. We cannot graduate people fast enough! Our placement department works with Travel Company's nation wide and will work with you to start your travel career as soon as you are ¾ of the way through our training. Many people are placed before they graduate!
