CHANGES:

Passport Required as of January 23 for ALL passengers entering or re-entering the US. www.GetapassportNow.com site logs 1.2M hits from 12/11 to 1/22. Passport applications are taking 8 weeks to fulfill. Only 27% or all Americans currently have a valid passport.

Express Security Clearance at Airport Expands: Clear Registered Traveler, has been operating at the Orlando Airport since July of 2005 opens at New York's JFK Airport. It is set to launch at Indianapolis, San Jose and Cincinnati airports this month and expects to expand to 22 more US Airports in 2007. Travelers can pay a $99.95 annual fee and must pass background check. They will have access to express airport security check in.

GROWTH:

Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC) reports Travel Agent Sales closed out 2006 with a Bang! Travel agents remitted $77.8 billion worth of sales through ARC last year, up 10% from the $70.5 billion remitted in 2005. The 2006 volume reached levels not seen since the record year of 2000. 2007 expected to be even higher.

The Air Transport Association (ATA) the trade group for US airlines is projecting a net profit of 4 Billion for US Airlines in 2007.

American Express Travel’s net income for the fourth quarter rose 24% to $922 million on revenue of $7.2 billion, a 13% increase.

Best Western, the membership-based lodging company added 113 hotels in North America, while the number of Best Western hotels in China grew by 50% reported that it ended 2006 with a total of 4,164 hotels in 80 countries and territories, including 2,395 hotels in the U.S, Canada and the Caribbean, and 1,769 hotels internationally.

According to the World Tourism Organization, China alone is expected to generate 100 million outbound tourists by 2020, compared with fewer than 15 million today. China has more cell phones than the U.S. has people and already has 700,000 millionaires.

CRUISING:

Cruise Lines International Association estimated 12.1 million people cruised in 2006, beating CLIA's original 2006 forecast by about 500,000 passengers. An estimated 12.6 million people will cruise in 2007, 10.6 million of them from North America. CLIA reports the industry continues to grow and the ships continue to sail full.

Costa Cruises, which is owned by Carnival Cruise Lines in July became the first international cruise line to offer cruises to Chinese nationals on voyages that departed from mainland China. The Costa Allegra's itineraries leave from Shanghai and Hong Kong. Costa Cruises will soon open the books on its cruises from China on the Costa Allegra to the rest of the world.
