TRAVEL INDUSTRY GROWTH UPDATE:

Nearly 3 Million people cruised in the second quarter of 2006, an 11.67% increase over the same period in 2005, according to the Cruise Lines International Association. Of the 2.97 million passengers to cruise in the quarter, about 2.5 million passengers were sourced from North America, CLIA said.

U.S. airlines presented their final arguments to the Transportation Dept. for highly prized new service to China. China is the world's fourth-largest business travel market, with spending of $7.41 billion on air travel in 2005 as a key indicator. It was reported that 28% of surveyed companies had increased T&E expenditure this year and that 87% of that hike occurred in mainland China and Hong Kong. China's business travel market ranks fourth after the U.S., Japan and Germany.

United Airlines reported a $190 million profit for third-quarter 2006, continuing the trend in which most major U.S. carriers are benefiting from strong demand, higher fares, cost-cutting and the recent fuel price declines. Northwest, still in the midst of its Chapter 11 reorganization, reported a third quarter loss of $1.2 billion. But it noted the loss included $1.4 billion in reorganization costs. Excluding reorganization and unusual items, the airline would have posted a third quarter profit of $252 million. The results are a "significant improvement" and demonstrate "steady progress in restructuring." The airline's third quarter revenue increased 2.3% to $3.4 billion. American Airlines posted back-to-back quarterly profits. Continental reported a $237 million profit for the third quarter. Southwest continued its moneymaking ways and showed third quarter profits of $48 million, following a record quarterly profit of $333 million from April to June.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL INFORMATION & SECURITY ISSUES:

The Air Transport Association (ATA) is forecasting that 25 million passengers - an average of more than two million per day - will travel globally on U.S. airlines during the 2006 Thanksgiving holiday season. The nation's airlines expect this 3 percent year-over-year increase in passengers to result in planes, on average, being more than 80 percent full over the holiday. Sunday, Nov. 26 and Monday, Nov. 27, are expected to be the busiest two days.

To ensure a smooth travel experience this Thanksgiving season, ATA encourages passengers to: Become familiar with the TSA ban on liquids, gels and aerosols; note that any such items in carry-on baggage must be packed in three-ounce or smaller containers that fit comfortably inside a one-quart, zip-top bag; any additional quantities of liquids, gels or aerosols should be placed in checked luggage; leave lighters and matches at home. Passengers should familiarize themselves with all TSA-permitted and prohibited items and under what circumstance permitted items can be carried onboard; travel with an unexpired government-issued photo identification card and allow plenty of time to get to the airport, park, check in, go through security and get to the gate.
